City centre / top of the town west

Stirling achieved city status in 2002 as part of the Queen's Golden Jubilee celebrations and mixes rich history with modern living. Dominated by the Castle, the former market town has a population of more than 41,000 people although this is added to by thousands of tourists who visit Stirling throughout the year. Modern Stirling has a mix of busy retail areas, arts venues and light industry and sits at the heart of the motorway and rail networks.

Police and Community Priorities

The team work closely with the community to identify the issues of most concern and then take action to tackle them.  The following are the PACT priorities identified by the community for September 2010:

Problem: Drug dealing in Friars Street and Murray Place – Daily

Response: Targeted foot patrols in plain clothes and uniform have given us a great deal of information regarding individuals of interest and we are greatful to the community for their help. Increased concerns have been raised regarding people hanging around premises at the bottem of Friars Street near to the bus stop, we are looking to work with the businesses in the area to minimise any disruption.

We will continue to tackle this issue and would welcome any information you have concerning drug issues in your community.

Problem: Anti-Social Behaviour – Youths drinking in City Centre – Friday and Saturday evenings.

Response: We continue to have strong relations with Stirling Council and volunteers to engage children and educate them about the dangers of alcohol. We are visiting the off licenses in the city centre frequently and supporting them in their efforts to detect and decline agents seeking to purchase for children.

We are in the process of forming a lasting partnership with the local Of License premises in the city centre. A meeting was held in August attended by Police, off license managers, Stirling Council and others interested in minimising the harm from alcohol. This was very worthwhile and will result in furture projects aimed at reducing the instances of adult agent purchase of alohol for consumption by children. We will keep you posted of progress.

It will continue to be our intention within the team to pursue individuals supplying alcohol to children, in circumstances where we find children under the influence of alcohol we will investigate the source with a view to identifying those responsible, we will seek to prosecute in all cases, seeking the maximum penelties. Where a child is harmed as a result of consuming alcohol the person responsible for the supply should expect any penalties to be severe.

Getting involved

The team would like to meet with as wide a cross section of the community as possible and can be spoken to in person at venues throughout the month, dates for specific events will be published soon.

We will be rolling out our mobile police office regularly in order that you can call on us and talk to us about your issues. The office will be in Murray Place on Thursday 9th September 2010 @ 1100hrs onwards. We hope to see you there!
