Don't give it away - Lock it away
Tuesday, 06th July 2010
If you wouldn't give it away, then lock it away.
That's the message from Central Scotland Police following a recent spate of thefts from vehicles across the area.
Officers are warning people not to leave valuables in their cars, and as the summer holidays kick off more and more people will be travelling into the region, bringing with them items such as satellite navigation systems and cameras.
In the past six months, personal belongings with a value of over £7000 have been stolen from vehicles in the Central Scotland Police area.
These goods are often being sold on and if you suspect someone of selling stolen goods, speak to the police.
Inspector Russell Penman, Head of Policing Management Unit for Central Scotland Police, wants motorists to steer thieves away from their vehicles this summer: "The most common items stolen are small personal belongings, such as satellite navigation systems, MP3 players, mobile phones, laptops, bags and wallets, and are easy pickings for the opportunistic thief.
"By leaving these types of items in your vehicle - especially if that vehicle isn't locked - you'd be as well to just give your goods away, which is why we're using the car boot sale to demonstrate that point.
"Whether you're a visitor to the area or a resident, don't let criminals enjoy the summer at your expense.
Central Scotland Police's advice is simple:
- Always make sure your vehicle is locked and secure before leaving it
- Lock any personal belongings in a glove compartment or boot
- Don't leave satellite navigation systems in your vehicle
- When parking in remote spots be extra vigilant when locking personal items away
- Look around before locking any possessions in glove compartments or boots, and be aware of who might be watching you do this
- If in doubt, remove the items from the car and taken them with you
